When Nichiren came to Minobu, Kai Province (Yamanashi Prefecture) in 1274, he assisted the priest in establishing the headquarters of the Nichiren Sect there. He himself became a priest in 1281, assuming the name of Nichien. After the death of Nichiren, he and six other distinguished followers of Nichiren maintained the headquarters at Minobu.
