1926 graduate Department of History and Archeology, Moscow University. 1930 completed postgraduate studies at Research Institute of Archeology and Art Studies.
From 1927 did archeological research in Southern Siberia, Kazakhstan and Transbaykal. 1929-1938 senior associate, State Historical Museum, Moscow, and later member of its Learned Council. From 1930 simultaneously senior associate, State Academy of the History of Civilization (now Institute of Archeology, USSR Academy of Sciences).
From 1939 professor, Chair of Archeology, Moscow University. 1945-1951 deputy director, Institute of Archeology, USSR Academy of Sciences. 1947-1962 head, Neolithic and Bronze Age Section, Institute of Archeology, USSR Academy of Sciences.
From 1949 exec ed, journal Vestnik drevney istorii. 1953-1954 deputy acad secretary. Department of Historical Sciences, USSR Academy of Sciences.
Specialized in the ancient and medieval history and archeology of Southern Siberia and Centr Asia. 1948-1949 led joint excavations of USSR Academy of Sciences and Mongolian Sciences Committee at Karakorum, Khar-Balgas and other Mongolian towns. Later led other archeological expeditions to Tuva Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, Chita Oblast and Mongolia.
