Sergey Vasilievich Petrov

Sergiy (Sergey Vasilievich Petrov) was born on October 10, 1924, in Krasnodar, Russian Federation. He was born in the family of the workers.

Education

Sergey Vasilievich graduated from high school in Krasnodar in 1942. He became a monk in 1943. He graduated from Moscow Theological Divinity School in 1947 and Moscow Theological Academy in 1951.

Career

Sergiy worked as a lecturer at Saratov Theological Divinity School from 1951 to 1952. He became a priest in 1952, dean of the Ascension Cathedral in Yelets, Lipetsk Oblast from 1954, rural dean of the churches of Yeletsky District from 1954 to 1958. Sergiy was an inspector from 1958 and rector of Odessa Theological Divinity School from 1959.

In the period from 1960 to 1961, he became the Bishop of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi and Vicar of the Kherson-Odessa Diocese from 1960 to 1961. From 1961 to 1963, he was the Bishop of Voronezh and Lipetsk. From 1963 to 1965, he was the Archbishop of Minsk and Belarus. He became the of Archbishop Kherson and Odessa from 1965 and the Metropolitan of Kherson and Odessa in 1971. At the same time he ruled the Diocese of Donetsk and Mariupol from 1965.

Achievements

• Sergiy participated in many international theological and peace forums and conferences. He was the head of the Patriarchate of Moscow and permanent member of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church from 1986 to 1987. He visited Voronezh to celebrate the 300th anniversary of its diocese in 1982.
