When the civil war of the Meiji Restoration broke out (1868), his clan became the spearhead of the Shogunate forces. Tesshin persuaded his lord to leave the Shogunate camp and go to Kyoto to apologize for his action. The lord was pardoned and was entrusted with the task of spearheading the Imperial forces marching to Edo via the Tosando Highway across central Japan.
