Tetsuzo Suda

Background

Tetsuzo Suda was born in 1848 in Nagano, Japan. He was the third son of Kaname Hosoi, an ophthalmologist.

Education

Tetsuzo Suda studied Western medicine under Tairei Suda, his uncle. He then studied at the Medical School in Tokyo under German physicians Mueller and Hoffmann. He became the first man to graduate from a school of Western medicine (1876).

Career

After graduation, he taught ophthalmology at the Daigaku Toko, predecessor of the Medical Department, Tokyo University, and was appointed director of the Hiroshima Prefectural Hospital (1878).

Appointed professor at Tokyo University (1882) and resigned from the post (1886), to start practicing at Koishikawa, Tokyo.
