Ujikiyo Yamana was born in Japan. He was the son of Tokiuji.
Ujikiyo Yamana was originally Lord of Mutsu (Aomori Prefecture), and for nine years fought gallantly for the Ashikaga Shogunate against the Yoshino Court (South Dynasty) (1375-1384) and was well rewarded. Later at the behest of the Shogun he crushed his own nephew, Tokihiro and in reward was given the latter's estate (1390). The following year Mitsuyuki, a relative of his, inveigled him into going against the Shogunate by telling him that the Shogun was plotting to destroy their family. Ujikiyo believing this rose in revolt and attempted to capture Kyoto but was defeated and killed in action. This is known as the Meitoku Affair.
