From the 1st to the 6th grade he studied at the school in Tehran (Iran), where he lived with his parents. From the 7th to the 10th grade he studied at the men's secondary school № 1 in Moscow. June 1952 he graduated from the 10th grade at the secondary school No. 1 in Moscow. At the same time he was studying at the Moscow City Aviation Club. In 1953 he graduated from the 6th Military Aviation School of the initial pilot training. In 1955 he graduated from the Kacha Higher Military Aviation twice Red Banner order of Lenin School of Pilots named for A.F. Myasnikov (KVVAUL) of the North Caucasian Military District. September 1961 - January 1968 - student of the Faculty of Engineering of the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy. After graduation was given the qualification pilot-cosmonaut-engineer.
March 7, 1960 - by order of the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force enlisted as a listener-cosmonaut of the Central Air Force (1st recruitment set). January 25, 1961 he appointed to the post of cosmonaut and given the qualification "Cosmonaut of the Air Force". November 1961 - May 1962 - preparation for the first group flight at two items of spacecraft "Vostok" as a backup of the pilot of the spacecraft "Vostok-3"; August 11, 1962 he was backup of the pilot A. The first flight - June 14-19, 1963 as a pilot of the spacecraft "Vostok-5". He completed a joint flight with the spacecraft Vostok-6 (pilot - V. Tereshkova). Flight duration: 4 days. 23 hours 07 min. Call sign: "Yastreb".
The second flight - September 15-23, 1976 as a Capitan of the Soyuz-22 spacecraft together with V. Aksenov. During the flight, a multi-zone camera MKF-6 manufactured in the GDR was tested. Flight duration: 7 days. 21 hours 52 min. 17 seconds Call sign: "Yastreb ".
The third flight - August 26 - September 3, 1978 as a Capitan of the Soviet-German crew of the Soyuz-31 spacecraft (landing on the Soyuz-29 spacecraft) under the program of the fourth expedition aimed to visit the orbital platform Salyut-6 together with Z. Jen (GDR). At the platform he worked with V. Kovalenko and A. Ivanchenkov. Flight duration: 7 days. 20 hours 49 min. 04 seconds Call sign: "Yastreb".
1982 - retired from the cosmonaut detachment as a result of the appointment to a new position.

Many of his later years in the space programme were involved with promoting the Intercosmos programme amongst the world"s Socialist nations.
He liked to play goal keeper.
