In 1910 Vasiliy Yakovlevich graduated from gymnasium in Kursk, Russian Federation. In 1914 he graduated from the classical and philological departments of Saint Petersburg Institute of History and Philology.
Since the end of 1916, Vasiliy Yakovlevich was a privat-dozent at Petrograd University (now Saint Petersburg State University). Since the beginning of 1919 he worked as a professor at Saratov university. He also worked as a chairman of the Department of Art and Literature of Lower Volga Scientific Society of Local Studies. In 1931, he was appointed a professor and then a head of the department of Universal Literature of Voronezh State Pedagogical Institute. He specialized in ancient, Western European, Russian (XIX century) literature. Kaplinsky taught a history of music at Voronezh Music Technical School. He also was a lecturer at Voronezh Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Society, and presented lectures on literature and music.
