In 1963 Vasily Andreevich Yurkiv graduated from the Lviv Medical Institute, with the specialty "general medicine". A passionate desire to devote his life to biochemistry led Vasily Andreevich to the postgraduate study of the Biochemistry Institute of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences (1965). A.V. Palladin recollected a talented young man and recommended him to Moscow, to the oncocentre of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, where he successfully passed Doctor of Science defense.
Jointly with the President of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences V.I. Pokrovsky, Vasily Andreevich organized a modern laboratory. Vasily Andreevich Yurkiv is a leading expert in the field of clinical biochemistry of infectious diseases. The enzyme NaCl/NaHCOO3-ATPhase was discovered by Vasily Andreevich together with V.S. Shubin. He contributed a lot in the study of biochemical processes in organism with toxic-infectious shock and parasitic diseases.
Since 1994 Vasily Andreevich Yurkiv is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, and since 2000 - a full member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Member of the editorial boards of the journals "Bulletin of experimental biology and medicine", "Issues of medical chemistry", "Pathogenesis" and the expert council on infectious diseases of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences presidium, and as well a member of the bureau of the medical and biological department of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
