In 1955 Boris Ivanovich graduated from the Dnepropetrovsk Medical Institute and entered a postgraduate study at the general pathology department of the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (Leningrad).
From 1955 till now Boris Ivanovich Tkachenko has been working at the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (now RAMS). Beginning with the post of a senior laboratory assistant at the department of general pathology (1958-1959), a junior research scientist at the laboratory of general physiology (1959-1963), then became a senior research scientist of the general physiology department (1963-1965), the head of the blood circulation laboratory of the general physiology department (since 1965 ), deputy director for scientific work (1970-1973), the head of the department of visceral systems’ physiology (since 1972). Since 1990 – the director of the RAMS Institute of Experimental Medicine. Since 1986 he has been the head of the normal physiology department of the 1st Leningrad Medical Institute named after I.P. Pavlov (now St. Petersburg State Medical University named after academician I.P. Pavlov). The main direction of scientific activity is the physiology of visceral systems, he mainly works on the physiology of blood circulation.
In 1978 Boris Ivanovich Tkachenko was elected as a corresponding member, and in 1984 - a full member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (now - the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences). Member of the International Academy of Sciences (1994), New York’s Academy of Sciences (1995), member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (1999), member of the Central Council of the Physiological Society named after I. P. Pavlov (1976), member of the Problem Commission "The physiology of blood circulation"(1983), a chairman of the Interdepartmental Scientific Council "Medical problems of the North-West" (2001). He is a member of the editorial board of the journals "The successes of physiological sciences" (1975-1987), "Human ecology" (1999), member of the editorial boards of the journals "Memoirs of SPSMU named after I.P. Pavlov "(1998)," Russian physiological journal named after I.M. Sechenov(1996)", "News of the Belarus’ National Academy of Sciences","Experimental and clinical physiology", editor-in-chief of "The medical academical journal" of the North-West branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (2001), expert of the State Scientific Research and Consulting Center of Expertise (2000).
