Career

Originally a naval officer, he took the opportunity to Bee Japan after his ship touched Nagasaki. Liking the country, he decided to stay on and was appointed a Consul at the Portuguese Legation in Kobe. Soon after he married a Japanese woman and began taking great interest in things Japanese.
