Afanasy was born in 1782 in Obukhov, Ukraine; son of a priest.
He graduated from the Kiev Theological Academy in 1803.
He taught at Kiev Theological Academy various subjects in the lower and middle classes. In 1814 he took monastic vows. Inspector and teacher of theological sciences (1817-1819), rector (1819-1821) of the Voronezh Theological Seminary. Cathedral hieromonk and preacher (since 1821), governor (since 1826) of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. Rector of the St. Nicholas Monastery in Kiev (since 1834).
He is the author of spiritual writings: "The initial exercises in preaching the word of God, under the guidance of mentors" (St. Petersburg,. 1837), "Word in the day of the archpriest Michael and the names of their imperial majesties Mikhail Nikolaevich and Mikhail Pavlovich" (St. Petersburg, 1837).
In 1814 he took monastic vows.
