Background
Egawa Hidebumi was born in Tokyo in 1898. He was the grandson of Tarozaemon Egawa, the scholar of western learning who died during the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Egawa Hidebumi was born in Tokyo in 1898. He was the grandson of Tarozaemon Egawa, the scholar of western learning who died during the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
In 1925 he graduated from Tokyo University.
After graduating he stayed behind first as assistant professor and then professor (1936). In between he proceeded to France for further studies and was a delegate to International Conference of Comparative Law held in Rome, Italy (1950).
