Was forced into priesthood while young, but with the death of his elder brother returned to secular life and attended first the Yokohama Law School and then Tokyo School of Buddhism, where he became conversant with Buddhist lore and the national classics. Later was associated in turn with Shogyo Shimbun, Hochi Shimbun and Nihonoyobi-Nihonjin Magazine. Was an authority on ancient customs and manners and of erotic literature of the Edo Period, on which subject he wrote many books.
