Giro Abe was born in 1883 in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan.

He completed a course in philosophy at Tokyo University and became a disciple of Soseki Natsume, famous novelist and an authority on English literature, in 1909.
He wrote many essays on literature and philosophy, which influenced the younger generations. When a department of literature and law was established in Tohoku University in Sendai City in 1921, he was appointed professor of same. The following year he visited Europe and studied Goethe. He is known as an authority on aesthetics.
Abe also was a member of Gakusliiin (Alumni Association of government designated universities).
