Kageharu Nagao was born in 1443.
He was a chief retainer of the Yamanouchi-Uesugis, who ruled Yamanouchi, Kamakura (Kanagawa Prefecture). After the death of his father, when Akisada Uesugi made Tadakage Nagao, a relative of Kageharu, his house-steward (1509),he rebelled against Akisada in collusion with Shigeuji Ashikaga. Kageharu, however, was defeated and surrendered. After the Uesugis’ prestige declined, Kageharu again rebelled and recovered Snirai Castle which he had lost in his first revolt. He later became a Buddhist priest, calling himself Igensai. A horseman of distinction, he is said to have written some books on horsemanship.
