He served Kiyokata Uesugi together with his father. In 1440, when warriors of the Yuki family rose in revolt in the Kanto district against the Muromachi Shocjunate, Kiyokata ordered Kagenobu to go to Kyoto to report it to the Shogunate. Shogun Yoshimasa Ashikaga, upon the report, sent Mochifusa Uesugi and ms troops to Kanto to suppress the revolt. In 1454, Shigeuji Ashikaga. the Slid gun’s deputy in Kanto, killed Noritada Uesugi, Kanto Governor-General. Kagenobu and his father, with Akisada Uesugi as head of their army, attacked Shigeuji in Kamakura, with the permission of the Shogunate in Kyoto. Shigeuji fled to Koga (Ibaraki Prefecture) and called himself Koga-Kubo or Shogun in Koga. Akisada became Kanrei, or Governor-General, of Kanto and lived in Kamakura, and Kagenobu became his chief retainer.
