Kenrin was the son of Kenboku Matsushita, a doctor.

He followed his father's profession and began his career as a physician in Kyoto. He is, however, remembered mostly as a scholar of the national classics, in which he made considerable research. Late in life, he entered the services of Lord of Takamatsu (Kanawa Prefecture).
