After graduating from Tokyo College of Arts and Science (1936) joined Chuo University as instructor to eventually become professor (1939). Is noted in literary circles for his theories on the teaching of the national language. Among his works are "History of the Styles of Japanese Literature" and "History of Japanese Novels."
