Career

Tokoku Kitamura was originally of a philosophical bent of mind and became a Christian. Later, he turned to popular literature and came into prominence with the publication of a dramatic poem (1889). Later along with such associates as Toson Shima-zaki, Shukotsu Togawa, Tokuboku Hirata and Kocho Baba Tokoku began the publication of a magazine titled "Bungakukai" (World of Literature). His brilliant writings soon made him a central character in the literary world of that time and his idealistic romanticism stimulated Meiji literary circles. A courageous writer Tokoku often attacked practical utilitarianism in his writings. He later committed suicide.
