Tokushi Komori was originally proprietor of a pawnshop. While on a visit abroad, he realized the necessity of improving the Japanese alphabet in 1890. And upon returning home and settling in Tokyo in 1901 Tokushi began a movement for reformation of the Kanamoji script and designed a unique style which could be written horizontally. Unfortunately as his script was difficult to read it did not become popular. Nevertheless he is considered a pioneer in this field.
