Vladimir A. Kirillov was born on February 13, 1948, in Molodechno, in the Mahilyowskaya Voblasts' of Belarus. He is Belarusian. His documented family relationships include his mother, Maria, his father, Andrew, and a child named Andrew.
Kirillov studied biophysics at Belorussian State University and completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biophysics in 1971. His academic training provided the foundation for a career combining physical methods of radiation measurement with biomedical research and cytological diagnosis.
Kirillov began his professional career in 1971 as a researcher at the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering, where he worked until 1980. From 1980 to 1988, he headed the research laboratory of Biophysics at the Belarusian Research Institute for Epidemiology and Microbiology. Between 1988 and 2003, he headed the research laboratory of dosimetry and cytology at the Research Institute of Radiation Medicine. From 2003, he continued his scientific work at Belarusian State Medical University, where his research affiliation included the Laboratory for Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Dosimetry and Cytology. His investigations examined the reconstruction of absorbed radiation doses from electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of tooth enamel, including the effects of mechanical preparation and diagnostic X-ray exposure. In parallel, he developed quantitative and computer-assisted approaches to thyroid cytology, including karyometric methods for distinguishing malignant from benign thyroid lesions and expert systems for thyroid pathology diagnosis.
Research on artifacts in electron paramagnetic resonance dosimetry caused by mechanical effects on samples of tooth enamel, quantitative changes in thyroid lymphoid cells as markers of malignancy, and the technology of creating an expert system for diagnosing thyroid pathology.
Research on the analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of tooth enamel exposed to combined radiation and mechanical effects, and on thyroid carcinoma diagnosis based on a set of karyometric parameters of follicular cells.
Developed quantitative and computer-assisted diagnostic approaches for thyroid disease, including expert systems based on karyometric and qualitative cytological signs of cell atypia.
