Gusev was born on May 18, 1937 in Voronezh.
In 1959, he graduated from the philological department of the History and Philology Faculty of Voronezh State University. In 1964, he graduated from Moscow State University. He became Ph.D. in Philology in 1984. In 1986, he became Professor.
In 1959-1961, he worked in the newspaper "Molodoy Kommunar". In 1965-1966, he was a teacher of the Department of Soviet Literature at Voronezh State University. In 1966-1970, he was a consultant of the Board of the Writers' Union of the USSR in Moscow. Since 1970 he has been working at the Literary Institute named after A.M. Gorky; heading the Department of Theory and Literary Criticism. Since 1989, he has been working as the editor-in-chief of the journal "Moskovsky Vestnik". Since 1989, he has been the chairman of the Board of the Moscow organization of the Writers' Union of Russia. Since 1999 he has been a member of the Board and Secretary of the Writers' Union of Russia. He has been publishing his works since 1955 (since 1957 in the journal "Ascent").
