Elected Berkeley Fellow of Owens College and Fellow of Victoria University, 1892. Subsequently studied at the University of Heidelberg under the late Professor Victor Meyer. Appointed Head of the Chemical Department at the Battersea Polytechnic, London, 1896.
Lecturer in Chemistry and Metallurgy at Owens College, Manchester, 1898-1905. Fellow of the Chemical Society, 1893. Member of the Iron and Steel Institute, 1903.
Professor of Applied Chemistry, Leeds University, since 1905.
