Yuri Alexandrovich graduated from the Leningrad Musical College (1948) and the historical-theoretical and piano faculties of the Leningrad Conservatory (now Saint Petersburg Conservatory) (1953), and finished the graduate school there (1957).
Yuri Alexandrovich Levashov participated in the Great Patriotic war. Later in life, he was a pianist-accordionist of the Military Academy of Communications (1958-1959), pianist of the club of the Kirov Military Medical Academy (1960-1961). Assistant (1961-1967), teacher, senior teacher at the Department of Music History, Leningrad Conservatory (now Saint Petersburg Conservatory) (1969-1970). Lecturer of the theory of music at the Leningrad Choreographic School (1970-1971), senior teacher at the Department of History, Theory of Music and Composition of the Petrozavodsk branch of the Leningrad Conservatory (now Saint Petersburg Conservatory) (1971-1972).
Since 1972, Yuri Alexandrovich lived in Voronezh. Senior Lecturer (1972-1977), Acting Associate Professor (1977-1982), Associate Professor (1982-1984, 1986-1993), Head of the Department of Music Theory (1984-1986) of the Voronezh State Academy of Arts.
Author of the essay "A. Koltsov and I. Nikitin in Music" (“Pod'yom”, 1987, No. 10), articles on the works of Sergei Prokofiev, Georgy Sviridov, Dmitry Shostakovich, Sergei Rakhmaninov, Pyotr Tchaikovsky and others, a series of television and radio programs about Voronezh composers, a series of lectures on history of domestic music.
