Cleveland Bellow was born in 1946 in San Francisco, California, United States.
Cleveland Bellow studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland where he earned a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in Graphic Design (1969) and an MA (Master of Arts) in Painting, Drawing and Education (1971). He also received his California Secondary Teaching and Community College Credentials (1971, 1972) and was an intern at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (1975-1976).
His professional experience is quite varied. Since 1972 Cleveland Bellow has been an art instructor at the Art Education and Training Program at the De Young Museum Art School in San Francisco. He has been working as exhibits curator and consultant to the Earth N' Arts Gallery in Oakland since 1976 and as graphic communication coordinator for OCCUR since 1979. In 1977 Cleveland Bellow was appointed Alameda County Art Commissioner. He served as district organizer for the San Francisco Neighborhood Arts Program (1972-1974) and as art director for the San Francisco Black Expo, a Cultural Exhibition (1972; 1974).
Cleveland Bellow also taught art and art history at the following institutions: Laney College in Oakland (1973), Alcorn A&M College in Lorman, Mississippi (1971-1972), and the Oakland Parks & Recreation Department (1968-1971).
