Shigeharu Watanabe was born in 1831 in Nakatsu (Oita Prefecture), Japan.
Shigeharu Watanabe studied classics under distinguished scholars in Kyoto and Osaka (from 1850) and later under Hironori Ajiro in Ise (Mie Prefecture).
Returned home (1869) and was employed by his clan as instructor in classics and preached the dignity of the national structure of Japan. Shigeharu Watanabe became priest of Hirota Shrine (1873) and several other Shinto shrines. Excelled in writing waka poems and was noted particularly for his long poems. Chief work: Koshiden-jui (Supplement to Ancient Japanese History).
